Chapter synopsis: This chapter examines the adoption and spread of Conservation Agriculture in North Africa. The chapter begins by providing an overview of the geography, soil, climate and farming environment in North Africa before moving on to discuss the importance of agriculture and food security in the North African economy. The chapter then moves on to examine the history and development of Conservation Agriculture, providing a specific analysis of the developments in Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan and Tunisia. A section on the major research achievements and advances in knowledge of realigning development, economy and environment with Conservation Agriculture is also included. The chapter also addresses adoption barriers, constraints and gaps as well as highlighting the potential drivers and opportunities of the adoption of Conservation Agriculture. Networks, partner institutes and distributional effects are also discussed.
