Production of biodiesel from oilseeds: Jatropha curcas

Code: 9781786766281
Rahmath Abdulla, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Malaysia

Chapter synopsis: Our earth is on the verge of a severe global energy crisis with less energy reserves which are soon to be named as ‘extinct’. Liquid biofuels such as biodiesel serve as an importance sustainable energy to replace fossil derived diesel fuel. Competition of edible oils for food and fuel make the non-edible oils as most favorable feed stock for biodiesel production around the world. In such a scenario, biodiesel production from oilseeds of non-edible crop- Jatropha curcas has immense significance. The seeds of J. curcas yield around 40-60% oil which is an excellent feedstock for biodiesel. Both life cycle analysis and economic analysis of biodiesel derived from Jatropha shows that biodiesel produced through immobilized lipase holds greater promise towards a sustainable future.
