Strengthening commercial extension systems for smallholders

Code: 9781786769633
Matthew Freeman and Wanjiku Mungai, One Acre Fund, Kenya

Chapter synopsis: When examining opportunities to strengthen commercial extension systems for smallholders, it is important to answer the question: to what end. This chapter puts forward the argument that in addition to supporting adoption of commercial technologies and increasing yields on select crops purchased by off-takers (which rightly motivate most commercial extension activities), the end should also be toward inclusive, human-centred and sustainable growth. Not at the expense of productivity and financial sustainability of the commercial investment, but because of it. This chapter highlights the business case for such investments and identifies opportunities for public actors to build an enabling environment to better align incentives for commercial extension to support more inclusive and sustainable impact for smallholders.
