The emergence of antibiotic resistance in poultry farms

Code: 9781838791841
Issmat I. Kassem, Yosra A. Helmy, Isaac P. Kashoma and Gireesh Rajashekara, The Ohio State University, USA

Chapter synopsis: The use of antibiotics in poultry farming has enhanced production via effectively controlling infectious diseases and promoting growth of birds, allowing the industry to cope with the increasing consumer demands and provide safe and affordable products. However, the use of antibiotics results in the selection of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, including established animal and human pathogens. The emergence and proliferation of resistant pathogens and the cognate decrease in the efficacy of antibiotic therapy pose a concrete risk to public health and sustainable farming. Consequently, the need to tightly regulate the use of antibiotics in poultry farming has been highlighted as a pre-emptory necessity.
