Chapter synopsis: Rice farmers face many abiotic and biotic constraints in their quest to increase rice production. In conjunction with the introduction of new high yielding drought and flood tolerant rice varieties, increasing yields will require a reduction in losses to insect pests. This chapter presents the knowledge and expertise of leading rice entomologists from Africa, Asia and the Americas to provide the first global coverage of rice insect pests. It presents insects based on the following feeding types: root and stem feeders, stem borers, rice gall midges, leafhoppers and planthoppers, foliage feeders, and panicle feeders. In each case, the chapter provides an overview together with a case study of a particular insect, summarizing key information such as classification, distribution, host plants other than rice, description, biology, plant damage and ecology.
