Chapter synopsis:

This chapter discusses Moko bacterial wilt, the most serious bacterial disease affecting bananas and plantains. It starts by describing the main external and internal symptoms of the disease. The chapter then reviews advances in understanding the taxonomy and classification of disease-causing strains, before looking at host range, infection mechanisms and impact. Finally, the chapter reviews management strategies such as exclusion, disease identification and tracking, eradication techniques, the role of cultural practices in disease transmission and prospects for developing disease-resistant cultivars.
