Key issues in transportation of broiler and layer chicks

Code: 9781801468732
M. A. Mitchell, Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC), UK

Chapter synopsis:

Whilst there has been significant research on improvements to design, equipment and operation for transport of broiler chickens and end of lay laying hens, far less attention has been paid to the transportation of pullet chicks and pullets. This chapter reviews legislative requirements as well as research relating to understanding and mitigating the effects of factors such as journey time, potential lack of feed and water, thermal stress and stocking density.
