Improving regulatory approval processes for biopesticides and other new biological technologies in agriculture

Code: 9781786766991
Wyn Grant, University of Warwick, UK; and Roma Gwynn, Biorationale, UK

Chapter synopsis: This chapter reviews the progress that has been made in adapting plant protection regulations to the specific needs of biopesticides in Europe and rest of the world. They do need to be regulated as they can give rise to some environmental and other challenges, but existing regulations have been too influenced by the requirements of synthetic products. Some progress has been made, and there is a greater recognition of the benefits of biopesticides, but some regulatory agencies are under staffed and others lack relevant expertise.
