Exploiting current Musa collections

Code: 9781786769398
V. Guignon, Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, France

Chapter synopsis: Collections of Musa provide material for germplasm and genetic improvement; however, several challenges must be addressed by collections and information systems to optimize their use. In this chapter, we discuss conservation and germplasm integrity, accession characterization and information that adds value to collection documentation. We consider the environmental and experimental data that play an important role in selection of accessions for breeding and other purposes and how to reduce gaps in collections using banana in situ observations. Finally, we discuss information systems and their key role in collection management, with a focus on the importance of specific user interfaces and tools in order to simplify and accelerate research.
