Closed plant production systems in vertical farms for a circular economy

Code: 9781801469432
Yoshiaki Kitaya, Osaka Metropolitan University, Japan

Chapter synopsis:

The reuse, recycling and control of emissions from large-scale food waste in urban areas have gained increased attention in recent years. Developing efficient food production systems with a low environmental impact is an important issue in facility-based plant production systems, such as plant factories, as part of efforts to add more value to plant production from an environmental perspective. Plant production plays an important role in human health and welfare, particularly in urban areas. To produce food efficiently while protecting the environment, it is imperative to establish a material-cycling farming system to promote a material-cycling-oriented society. In this chapter, the author proposes three possibilities and perspectives for facility-based plant production systems with the circulation of materials to achieve a sustainable balance between food production and environmental protection.
