Chapter synopsis: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of illness and death globally. Its incidence has been closely linked to diet. This chapter reviews the complex nature of CVD and its comorbidities. It then assesses the current state of research on the protective and therapeutic effects of a range of plant phytochemicals in relation to CVD. It also addresses the range of initiatives to enhance phytochemicals in the diet to prevent or treat CVD.
