Code: 9781835452387
Rick van Emous, Wageningen University, The Netherlands

Chapter synopsis:

Poultry meat is the most important protein source in human diet, and global demand increased annually. Broiler breeders are the parents of broiler and has a substantial impact on the poultry meat chain producing first class hatching eggs with healthy chicks. This is becoming increasingly challenging, because the continuing increase in the genetic growth potential of the offspring and the parent stock as well. Therefore, broiler breeders are feed restricted which on their turn caused abnormal behaviour towards equipment or other birds, which can be indicative of frustration, boredom and hunger. State of the art management for housing, equipment, and health are necessary to optimize reproduction of breeders for a maximum number of healthy offspring. Besides these mentioned factors, diet composition and feeding strategies are important factors to reach this goal.
